New Delhi, February 10 Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor has spoken about the distance in his relationship with his late father Rishi Kapoor, saying that he does not want to repeat that in his relationship with his daughter, Raha.
In a video posted on Ranbir Kapoor Kingdom's YouTube channel, the actor spoke about legacy, acting, and his responsibilities as a husband and father.
"There was a bit of distance in my father's relationship with me, not like friendship, that's how that generation was," he said during a conversation with PNG Jewellery chairman and MD, Saurabh Gadgil.
"It's a life-changing experience. I have been talking about it earlier...With my child, I want to break down that wall, I want to be her friend and give her the freedom to pursue whatever she wants," the actor said.
Ranbir and actress Alia Bhatt welcomed Raha in November 2022.
Rishi Kapoor died in April 2020 after a battle with leukemia.
Ranbir, who is the fourth-generation actor in his family, including great-grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor, grandfather Raj Kapoor, and father Rishi Kapoor, admitted that his background made his journey in Bollywood easier.
"I have been given this opportunity, there are thousands, millions of talented artists who are waiting for it, and I can't take this for granted. I have to work hard, be original, and that's very important. I want to credit a lot of it to my upbringing," he said.
The actor, who made his debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya" in 2007, shared that he has always treated his legacy as a responsibility because those who came before him have already achieved a lot.
"(They) worked so hard, not just for money and respect, but to be the kind of human beings they were, the legacy they left behind...How they made people happy, how they changed society. I think it's a great responsibility that has passed down over the years. You have to carry it forward. That's what legacy means. It's about giving and receiving," he said.
Ranbir said people often talk about the successes of his family, but he has seen many ups and downs and failures closely.
"People speak about so much success, but in your family, there are also many failures, and you have seen that closely. You learn a lot from your failures, more than from success," he said.
The 43-year-old actor, who will next star in "Ramayana" and "Animal Park", noted that it's important to have an individualistic approach, even when carrying on a legacy.
"When you come from a family of achievers, the next generation doesn't just succeed based on past models. You need a very individualistic approach... If you are just copying and pasting what your forefathers have done over the years, there's a saturation point," he said.
"It's very important to remind yourself and the people around you about your roots, from where it all began, because you can learn a lot from history and your own legacy, and apply it to your work," he added.
