Rishra (West Bengal), May 14
Border Security Force (BSF) constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was reunited with his homeland on Wednesday after being released from Pakistani custody, bringing immense relief to his family in Rishra, Hooghly district of West Bengal.

The 10:30 am handover at the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab marked the end of an agonizing two-week ordeal for Shaw's family, who had been living in a state of anxiety since his apprehension by Pakistan Rangers on April 23. Shaw had reportedly crossed the India-Pakistan International Border in Ferozepur district, just a day after the Pahalgam terror attack.

Family Expresses Relief and Gratitude

Speaking to reporters, Shaw's family member expressed deep gratitude to the central government and BSF authorities for facilitating his safe return.
“We are delighted today. We thank the central government and the BSF authorities for their efforts to bring him back safely. The past two weeks have been filled with sleepless nights and uncertainty for us. We were constantly worried about his well-being,” the family member said.

He added, “We are now eagerly waiting to speak to him and see him in person. Our prayers have finally been answered.”

Peaceful Handover at the Border

A BSF spokesperson confirmed that the handover was conducted peacefully and adhered to established protocols. The force coordinated closely with Pakistani authorities to ensure a smooth transition.

Shaw’s release is a moment of relief amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly following recent cross-border incidents. His return has succeeded in diplomatic and security circles, reflecting effective agency coordination.

As the Shaw family awaits his return to Rishra, their joy is matched by the pride of an entire community welcoming their brave soldier home.
