Malda, Feb 3 (PTI) – The Border Security Force (BSF) has arrested four Bangladeshi nationals engaged in cattle smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border in Malda district’s Itaghati area. The operation took place on Sunday evening when a BSF jawan stationed at Border Outpost Itaghati detected suspicious movements around 7 PM.

According to a statement from the BSF South Bengal frontier, the suspects attempted to cross into India under the cover of fog and darkness. Acting swiftly, the jawan raised an alarm, prompting a coordinated response from fellow personnel and local villagers.

As the smugglers attempted to flee towards Adampur village, they sought refuge in nearby bushes to evade capture. However, with the combined efforts of BSF personnel and villagers, the area was encircled, leading to their eventual arrest after a brief standoff.

Upon interrogation, the apprehended individuals admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals engaged in the illegal cattle trade. They disclosed that they were smuggling cattle from India to Bangladesh and had been promised Rs 40,000 each for transporting two cattle.

Following their capture, the four smugglers were handed over to local police for further investigation. The BSF continues to intensify its vigilance along the border to curb such illegal activities.
