Two held with gold worth ₹1.1 crore in North 24 Parganas; 41 kg ganja also seized in separate incidents.
Kolkata, May 17 – In a significant crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday reported the apprehension of two individuals allegedly attempting to smuggle gold into India from Bangladesh. The incident took place in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.According to a statement issued by the BSF, personnel from the 143 Battalion of the South Bengal Frontier were maintaining heightened vigilance following intelligence inputs about possible gold smuggling through the Hakimpur area.
On Friday morning, BSF jawans spotted suspicious activity near Hakimpur Uttarpara village. Upon intercepting and searching two individuals, the security forces recovered ten gold biscuits weighing a total of 1.167 kilograms. The estimated value of the seized gold is ₹1.1 crore.
In separate operations conducted the same day, BSF jawans of the 32 Battalion in Nadia district and the 143 Battalion in North 24 Parganas intercepted smuggling attempts involving narcotic substances. A total of 41 kilograms of ganja was seized during these operations, the BSF said.
The ganja was reportedly being smuggled from India into Bangladesh, underscoring the ongoing efforts of smugglers to exploit the porous border.
The BSF continues to maintain a strong presence along the Indo-Bangladesh border, intensifying surveillance and intelligence-based operations to curb illegal cross-border activities.
