Built over 550 AI models in 5-6 yrs to enhance output, quality: Tata Steel

Ranchi, February 4 (PTI) — Tata Steel announced a significant leap in its technological transformation, revealing it has invested heavily in cutting-edge generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms. The company has also developed over 550 AI models aimed at improving output, productivity, quality, and operational safety.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Tata Steel emphasized its position at the forefront of AI-driven innovation in the steel industry, underscoring its commitment to blending AI and industry-specific technologies for enhanced operational outcomes.

Over the past five to six years, Tata Steel has built more than 550 AI models designed to optimize key areas such as yield, energy efficiency, throughput, quality control, stakeholder experience, safety, and sustainability. The steelmaker also highlighted its focus on generative AI, a powerful tool that combines conventional mathematical AI with the creative potential of AI-driven models.

"In our pursuit of technological excellence, we’ve invested extensively in generative AI platforms that power automated insights, conversational interfaces, and address complex, high-impact use cases," Tata Steel said in its statement. "These advancements are reshaping the way we approach production, decision-making, and business strategies."

The company further emphasized its pragmatic approach to AI, with a clear focus on practical applications. Tata Steel Chief Information Officer Jayanta Banerjee said, “We approach AI with a sense of realism, aligning every initiative to our specific business needs and long-term objectives. Technology should serve the business, not the other way around, which is why our tech investments are always aligned with measurable business KPIs.”

Banerjee also highlighted the crucial role of data management in unlocking the full potential of AI. “As business models evolve, AI must be treated as a strategic enabler that fits within a clear, value-driven framework,” he added.

AI Revolutionizing Safety and Operational Efficiency

Tata Steel’s AI-driven initiatives are not just limited to productivity enhancements but are also focused on workplace safety. The company has deployed real-time AI-powered detection systems on the shop floor to monitor and address potential hazards, such as missing personal protective equipment (PPE), unsafe practices, spills, and violations of standard operating procedures.

These AI systems also analyze safety observations to identify patterns and predict potential safety incidents, enabling proactive risk management and a safer work environment. "Our AI-driven safety applications create a safer workplace and help mitigate risks before they escalate," the company explained.

On the operational side, Tata Steel is using digital tools to optimize supply chain logistics, energy management, and remote operations. These improvements are designed to enhance decision-making, boost responsiveness, and increase overall productivity.

Tata Steel also unveiled its Enterprise Gen AI platform, which enables employees to securely query organizational data and access insights more efficiently. Powered by millions of generative AI tokens, this platform represents a significant leap in knowledge sharing and decision-making within the company. A notable application is a new Gen AI-based maintenance troubleshooting assistant, which offers real-time insights to shop floor managers, assisting in troubleshooting and corrective actions that minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency.

With these advancements, Tata Steel continues to lead the charge in integrating AI to drive growth, safety, and efficiency across its operations.
