Bullying isn't harmless; it destroys lives: Rahul on Kerala student suicide

New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI) – Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic suicide of a Kerala school student, Mihir Ahammed, reportedly due to relentless bullying. Calling for strict accountability, he emphasized that both the bullies and those who failed to intervene must be held responsible.

“The tragic loss of Mihir Ahammed to suicide due to bullying in a Kerala school is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to his family,” Gandhi wrote on social media platform X. He stressed that schools should be sanctuaries for children, yet Mihir endured relentless torment. "No child should endure what Mihir faced. Those responsible—both bullies and those who failed to act—must be held accountable," the former Congress chief asserted.

Highlighting the devastating effects of bullying, Gandhi underscored the role of parents in fostering kindness and empathy. "Bullying isn’t harmless; it destroys lives. Parents must teach kindness, love, empathy, and the courage to speak up. Believe your child if they say they are being bullied, and intervene if they are the bully," he urged.

Kerala Government Orders Inquiry Into Student's Suicide

In response to the tragic incident, Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has directed the Director of General Education (DGE) to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into Mihir's alleged suicide on January 15. His family claims that severe ragging at his school near Kochi pushed him to take his own life.

Sivankutty, in a Facebook post, stated that the Director of General Education has been tasked with thoroughly investigating the case and recommending necessary actions. He affirmed that any harmful activities occurring in schools, regardless of the institution's affiliation, would be identified and dealt with strictly. "If necessary, an amendment to the law will be considered," he added.

Referring to the case, Sivankutty acknowledged a mother's heart-wrenching complaint that her son died by suicide after facing brutal torture at a CBSE school in Thiruvaniyoor, Ernakulam district. He assured that the police would take swift action.

Family’s Allegations and Police Action

The ninth-grade student took the extreme step by jumping from his apartment in Tripunithura. His grieving mother later lodged a complaint with the Kerala Chief Minister and the state police chief, alleging that persistent ragging at school led to his suicide.

According to her petition, messages from Mihir’s friends and social media evidence indicate that he was subjected to ragging and physical assault. The authorities are expected to take stringent measures following the investigation.

This tragic incident has reignited discussions on the urgent need for anti-bullying policies and stricter enforcement in educational institutions across the country.
