New Delhi, Feb 27: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on Delhi's liquor policy has been officially referred to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for a detailed investigation, with the findings expected within three months, according to Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta.
The audit report, covering the period between 2017 and 2021, uncovered significant irregularities in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's excise policy. It pointed to lapses in licensing procedures, pricing mechanisms, and regulatory oversight, resulting in substantial revenue losses.
One of the most critical revelations of the report was an estimated revenue loss of ₹2,002 crore, attributed to multiple irregularities, including the failure to re-tender surrendered licenses, excessive discounts, and waivers in licensing fees. The report further alleged that these shortcomings benefited private entities at the cost of public funds.
The issue sparked intense debate in the Delhi Assembly, with several members raising concerns and demanding stringent action against those responsible for the alleged financial mismanagement. Gupta emphasized that the matter required immediate attention due to its fiscal implications.
The PAC will now undertake a thorough review of the report and is expected to submit its findings within three months. The development marks a significant step in scrutinizing the excise policy's implementation and ensuring governance accountability.
