Calcutta High Court Lawyers Boycott Proceedings Over Judge Transfer Recommendation

Kolkata, April 1 — Legal Fraternity Protests Supreme Court Collegium Move

Lawyers at the Calcutta High Court abstained from court proceedings on Tuesday in a unified protest against the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation to transfer a judge from the Delhi High Court to Kolkata.

The boycott was led jointly by the Bar Association and the Bar Library Club—two of the most prominent legal bodies representing advocates at the Calcutta High Court. In a joint statement, the associations voiced strong reservations over the proposed transfer, signaling dissent against what they believe is an unwarranted move by the Collegium.

The protesting lawyers also submitted a formal representation to the Chief Justice of India, outlining their concerns and urging reconsideration of the decision.

The demonstration underscores growing tensions within the judiciary regarding judicial transfers, often a sensitive and debated issue among legal professionals.
