Kannur, Kerala – February 27: The Kannur town police have registered a case against two women convicts for allegedly assaulting a Nigerian national inside the women's prison and correctional home in the district. The incident occurred on February 24, and the FIR was lodged three days later based on the victim's complaint.
One of the accused, Sherin, is serving a life sentence for the murder of her father-in-law, Cheriyanad Bhaskara Karanavar. The other accused, identified as Shabna, also reportedly participated in the attack.
According to police sources, the complaint was filed by prisoner Kane Simpou Julie (33), who alleged that Sherin pushed her while she was on her way to fetch water. Shabna allegedly assaulted her further while using abusive language.
The case has been registered under Section 296 (obscene acts) and Section 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Sherin had been in the news last month after the Kerala government recommended her early release to Governor Rajendra Arlekar, seeking a reduction in her sentence. She was convicted in 2010, along with three others, under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including murder. The state cabinet's decision to push for her release had sparked widespread criticism.
Authorities are investigating the recent assault case, and further legal proceedings are expected.
