New Delhi, Feb 26: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has relaxed its affiliation norms significantly, permitting schools to establish branch schools under the same name and affiliation number, officials confirmed on Monday.
Under the revised guidelines, while the primary school will cater to students from Classes 6 to 12, the newly established branch schools will be allowed to operate from the pre-primary level up to Class 5. Despite being under a unified identity, both institutions must maintain separate physical and academic resources, ensuring a seamless transition of students from branch schools to the leading institution without treating them as new admissions.
CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta stated that the management and ownership of both institutions must remain the same, sharing standard administrative and academic practices. "A single website will be maintained for both the main and branch schools, with a dedicated section highlighting branch school details," he emphasized.
Admissions for both branches will be handled by the primary school, overseeing financial operations. "Students moving from branch schools to the main school will be regarded as progressing naturally to Class 6 rather than undergoing fresh admissions," Gupta added.
Regarding staffing, each school must appoint distinct teaching and non-teaching personnel, but the primary school will manage salary disbursement centrally. Previously, CBSE did not allow schools of the same group to share an affiliation number, requiring separate affiliations for each institution.
The revised norms mandate independent adherence to CBSE’s infrastructure standards, safety protocols, and teacher-student ratios for both branches. Additionally, all official communication from CBSE will be directed to the primary school principal.
This move is expected to streamline school expansion while maintaining standardized quality and governance across CBSE-affiliated institutions.
