New Delhi, May 10 — Tensions flared again on Saturday night as Pakistan violated a newly brokered ceasefire agreement just hours after both nations had agreed to halt all hostilities across land, air, and sea, according to official Indian sources.
The ceasefire understanding was announced earlier in the day following four days of intense cross-border engagements involving drone and missile attacks that had brought India and Pakistan to the brink of full-scale war.
Despite the agreement, sources reported that firing resumed from the Pakistani side in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, drone activity was detected over the Pir Panjal region, signaling a breach of the ceasefire terms.
The truce was initially revealed in a surprise post by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that the United States had mediated the talks. In his message, he stated, “India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.”
However, senior Indian government officials emphasized that the ceasefire agreement stemmed from direct bilateral communication between New Delhi and Islamabad. “There were no preconditions, no post conditions, and no links to other issues,” sources stated, refuting claims of third-party mediation.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the development at a media briefing around 6 PM IST. He explained that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries had spoken over the phone earlier in the afternoon.
“The Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan called the Director General of Military Operations of India at 15:35 hours IST,” Misri said. “It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 17:00 hours Indian Standard Time today.”
The fresh violation has raised concerns about the fragility of the ceasefire and the potential for renewed escalation along the border.
