Mumbai, Feb 3 (PTI) – Central Railway commemorated a historic milestone on Monday, celebrating 100 years of electrification with a series of events, including an exhibition and a walkathon. The occasion marks a century since the first electric train in India ran on February 3, 1925, between Bombay VT (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, CSMT) and Kurla Harbour, covering a 16-kilometer stretch.
The electrification milestone came 72 years after India's first train journey between Boribandar (now CSMT) and Thane on April 16, 1853. The shift from steam-powered locomotives to the 1500V DC electric traction system in 1925 set the foundation for modernization in Indian Railways. Achieving 100% electrification of its broad gauge network in February 2023, Central Railway continues its commitment to sustainability and technological advancements.
As part of the centenary celebrations, General Manager Dharam Veer Meena inaugurated an exhibition at CSMT, showcasing the evolution of railway electrification. Speaking at the event, Meena described the milestone as "a confluence of history and progress" and reiterated Indian Railways' dedication to innovation, service improvements, and modern technology.
The exhibition at CSMT’s platform 7-8 features display boards, miniature working models, and other exhibits highlighting advancements in railway electrification. "This exhibition is open to the public and provides an insightful glimpse into the electrification journey," said Central Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Swapnil Nila.
Adding to the celebrations, over 250 participants took part in a walkathon, tracing the legacy of electrification in Indian Railways. A short film on railway electrification and a detailed presentation by Chief Electrical Engineer (Construction) Vineet Kumar further enriched the event.
This centenary celebration not only honors a significant transformation in India's railway history but also underscores the progress toward sustainable and efficient rail transport.
