Guwahati, Feb 26: The central government has committed to investing ₹4,800 crore over the next five years to enhance Assam’s waterways and related infrastructure, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, Sonowal emphasized the government's focus on bolstering the state’s transportation network, particularly through inland waterways. The allocated funds will be utilized for multiple projects, including the establishment of a ship repair facility, the construction of alternative roads to ports, and the development of terminals.

Additionally, the minister revealed plans to set up a Centre of Excellence in Maritime Education in Assam, which is expected to generate 5,000 skilled professionals annually for the shipping industry.

Highlighting the critical role of waterways in economic progress, Sonowal stated that the sector has seen significant growth since the BJP-led government assumed office in 2014. He further reiterated India’s ambition to position itself as a leading maritime nation by 2030 and among the top five shipbuilding nations globally.

The investment is expected to not only enhance Assam’s infrastructure but also contribute to India’s broader maritime vision, fostering economic growth and employment opportunities in the region.
