India might field left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh in their crucial Champions Trophy clash against New Zealand this Sunday, primarily due to Mohammed Shami's recent calf concerns and the Kiwi side’s strong presence of left-handed batters.

Arshdeep Singh Set to Feature Against New Zealand

During Friday's training session in Dubai, the 25-year-old Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh was extensively tested, bowling 13 overs at full intensity under the guidance of bowling coach Morne Morkel. In comparison, Mohammed Shami delivered only 6-7 overs with a shortened run-up, clearly refraining from exerting full strength.

Shami, who recently returned to India's squad after a lengthy injury lay-off, appeared to experience discomfort in his right calf during India's clash with Pakistan on February 23. Physios had to provide immediate treatment after his third over.

Tactical Decision Ahead of Semifinals

The Indian team management's decision appears driven by caution ahead of the critical semifinal stages. With five left-handed batters anticipated in New Zealand’s batting order, Arshdeep Singh's inclusion could strategically benefit India's bowling attack.

KL Rahul, addressing the media on Friday, remained non-committal on potential changes, emphasizing the reluctance to disrupt a winning combination. However, assistant coach Ryan Doeschate later subtly indicated possible tweaks to the bowling unit for tactical and fitness reasons.

Given these developments, Mohammed Shami is likely to be rested, allowing Arshdeep Singh to strengthen India's pace attack against New Zealand’s left-handers.
