Raipur, Feb 2 (PTI): Pacer Jagjit Singh delivered a sensational spell, claiming 6/51, as Chandigarh successfully defended a modest target to seal a 54-run victory over Chhattisgarh in their final Elite Group D Ranji Trophy match on Sunday.

Chasing 177 for victory, Chhattisgarh crumbled under relentless pressure, folding for 122 in just 30.1 overs, as Chandigarh’s bowlers dominated proceedings. Despite the win, Chandigarh’s campaign ended on a bittersweet note as they finished level on 25 points with Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu but missed out on the quarterfinals due to fewer bonus-point wins.

Jagjit’s Brilliance Seals the Win

Jagjit Singh led the charge with a fiery six-wicket haul, while off-spinner Vishu Kashyap played a key supporting role, picking up three wickets. Their efforts ensured that Chhattisgarh’s batting lineup never found stability.

Opener Aayush Pandey provided some resistance with a 41-run knock off 74 balls, hitting eight boundaries, but his effort went in vain. Prateek Yadav (27) and Sumit Ruikar (26) were the only other notable contributors as the rest of the lineup failed to offer a fight.

Chandigarh’s Second Innings Fightback

Earlier, resuming their fourth and final day at 222/4, Chandigarh managed to push their second innings total to 299, before being bowled out. Captain Manan Vohra remained their top scorer with 54 runs, followed by Mayank Sidhu (47) and Amrit Lubana (43), who chipped in with valuable contributions.

For Chhattisgarh, pacer Ravi Kiran was the standout performer, registering figures of 5/63, ensuring Chandigarh couldn't stretch their lead much beyond 176.

Chhattisgarh Falter in Chase

With a target of 177, Chhattisgarh had an opportunity to end their season on a high, but Chandigarh’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Jagjit Singh, proved too strong. The hosts collapsed swiftly, bringing a disappointing end to their campaign.

Though Chandigarh ended their season with a commanding win, their quarterfinal dreams were dashed due to the lack of bonus points. Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu advanced instead, leaving Chandigarh to reflect on what might have been.
