
Thane, March 2: The Maharashtra Crime Investigation Department (CID) has filed a comprehensive chargesheet exceeding 1,200 pages in the murder case of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has affirmed that a thorough investigation has been conducted and expressed confidence that the guilty will receive strict punishment.
Key Developments in the Case
The chargesheet was submitted on Thursday at a court in Beed district, covering Deshmukh's murder and two related cases. Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village, was abducted, tortured, and murdered on December 9 last year after attempting to thwart an extortion attempt targeting an energy company in Beed.His murder has sparked a political uproar, particularly due to the involvement of Walmik Karad, a close aide of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde. Karad has been arrested in connection with the extortion case linked to the crime.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Three separate cases have been registered at the Kej police station in Beed:- The murder of Santosh Deshmukh
- The attempt to extort money from Avaada Energy company
- The assault on the company's security guard
Government’s Stand and Legal Strategy
Speaking to the media on Saturday, CM Fadnavis stated, "The police have conducted a very professional investigation in the Santosh Deshmukh case. The chargesheet has been filed in a timely manner with complete evidence under the new law."He further assured that the government would request the court to fast-track the case and has appointed renowned prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam as the special public prosecutor. "I am confident that the court will ensure strict punishment for the accused," he added.
Status of the Accused
So far, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with Deshmukh’s murder. However, the prime accused, Krushna Andhale, remains absconding, and authorities are continuing efforts to track him down.The case continues to generate significant political and legal interest as investigations progress, with the state government emphasizing a firm stance on law and order.
