Bhopal, Feb 4 (PTI) – In a significant milestone for India's cheetah conservation efforts, Cheetah Veera has given birth to two cubs at Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district. With this latest addition, the park now houses a total of 26 cheetahs, including 14 cubs, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Tuesday.
Taking to social media platform X, Yadav expressed his joy, stating, "Two cheetah cubs enter Madhya Pradesh's Jungle Book. I am happy to share that the number of cheetahs is continuously increasing in the state. Today, female cheetah Veera has given birth to two cubs."
The chief minister commended the relentless efforts of officials, veterinarians, and field staff involved in the ambitious cheetah reintroduction project. He emphasized that their dedication has earned Madhya Pradesh the title of the "land of cheetahs."
Yadav also highlighted the positive impact of the growing cheetah population on the state's tourism industry, stating that it is creating new employment opportunities and boosting local economies. "We are always ready for conservation, promotion, and restoration of all wildlife along with cheetahs," he affirmed.
Kuno National Park became the focal point of India's historic cheetah reintroduction program when, on September 17, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released eight Namibian cheetahs—five females and three males—into the park's enclosures. This marked the world’s first intercontinental translocation of cheetahs, reintroducing the species to India seven decades after their extinction due to excessive hunting and habitat loss.
With the latest births, conservationists are hopeful that the cheetah population will continue to thrive, reinforcing India's commitment to wildlife restoration and ecological balance.
