The issue arose during Question Hour when Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Charan Das Mahant, accused the BJP government of misusing Central investigative agencies to target and intimidate opposition leaders. The protesting legislators alleged that Central agencies were conducting surveillance (recce) on state Congress president Deepak Baij, in an attempt to pressure elected members of zilla panchayats and janpad panchayats into supporting the BJP candidates for presidential posts.
Amid loud slogans and persistent disruption, Speaker Raman Singh adjourned the House proceedings for an initial 10 minutes. However, as soon as the session resumed, Congress MLAs intensified their protest by entering the well of the House and continuing their sloganeering against the government. Subsequently, the Speaker suspended the protesting legislators from the session in accordance with Assembly rules.
Following their suspension, Congress MLAs staged a walkout and announced a boycott of the entire day's proceedings. Speaker Raman Singh later revoked their suspension, allowing them to return to future sessions.
Speaking to media persons on the Assembly premises, Charan Das Mahant sharply criticized the BJP, accusing them of "murdering democracy." He emphasized that the Congress party had deliberately highlighted the issue within the Assembly to raise awareness about what he described as attempts by the ruling party to destabilize democratic institutions through intimidation tactics.
The dramatic events in the Assembly underscore heightened political tensions in Chhattisgarh ahead of crucial elections to local administrative bodies, where Congress alleges manipulation attempts by the ruling BJP.
