China Honours Galwan Clash Commander Qi Fabao with Prestigious CPPCC Award

Beijing, March 3, 2025 – China has honoured army regiment commander Qi Fabao, who sustained injuries during the Galwan Valley border clash with Indian soldiers in 2020, with the prestigious 2024 Outstanding Performance Award for members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Qi Fabao was among 33 distinguished individuals recognized during an official ceremony held in Beijing on Sunday, as reported by the Global Times, citing the CPPCC Daily.

Qi Fabao's Rise to Prominence

Qi Fabao gained significant public attention in 2022 after being selected as a torchbearer for the Winter Olympics held in Beijing. His participation led to diplomatic tensions, prompting Indian diplomats to boycott both the opening and closing ceremonies.

His recognition by China began even earlier, in 2021, when the Central Military Commission awarded Qi the prestigious title, "Hero Regimental Commander for Defending the Border". The Communist Party of China Central Committee further honoured him with the July 1 Medal, underscoring his growing prominence within China's political and military landscape.

In January 2023, Qi further solidified his status by joining the CPPCC as a special guest and subsequently becoming a member of its 14th National Committee.

Galwan Valley Clash: A Pivotal Moment

The Galwan Valley clash, which occurred in June 2020, resulted in 20 casualties among Indian soldiers and marked the most severe confrontation between India and China in over four decades. China acknowledged its own casualties eight months later, confirming the deaths of four Chinese soldiers.

The incident significantly strained bilateral relations, freezing diplomatic ties between India and China for over four years.

Restoration of India-China Relations

Diplomatic engagement resumed after a landmark meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, last October, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

This interaction paved the way for subsequent high-level discussions, notably between India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who serve as Special Representatives on the boundary question. Further meetings at the Foreign Secretary level contributed to gradually restoring communication and easing tensions.

China's honouring of Qi Fabao reaffirms the nation's continued emphasis on patriotic and military achievements, underscoring Qi's role as a prominent figure symbolizing Chinese national pride.
