New Delhi, May 11 – Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) President Sanjiv Puri has expressed strong support for India's decisive actions against Pakistan-based terrorists, reaffirming the industry's commitment to backing the government in ensuring the nation's continued economic progress.
Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives last month, India’s response has been one of punishment for those responsible for the killings. In an interview with PTI, Puri, who also serves as the Managing Director of ITC, described the government's response as "absolutely the right thing to do" and emphasized that nothing can justify the murder of innocent civilians.
"The government's approach aligns with its long-standing stance to punish those responsible for terrorism," Puri stated, underscoring the importance of holding the perpetrators accountable. "The industry stands firmly behind the government, committed to ensuring that India's economic progress remains on track," he added.
The conflict between India and Pakistan, triggered by the Pahalgam attack, has led to heightened tensions and military action. Puri urged the nation to use this moment to rededicate efforts toward nation-building, particularly focusing on strengthening India's defense manufacturing capabilities.
Ceasefire and Diplomatic Response
In a significant development, India and Pakistan reached an agreement on May 6 to halt all military actions and ceasefire violations following four days of intense cross-border hostilities, including drone and missile strikes. This de-escalation is seen as a positive step after the deadly exchange of fire that brought both countries to the brink of full-scale war.Puri welcomed the announcement of the ceasefire, commending the Indian government's measured diplomatic and security response to the recent hostilities. He particularly praised the swift and decisive actions taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which sent a clear message that terrorism would not be tolerated.
"The Prime Minister has shown leadership by taking swift, decisive, and responsible steps to secure the nation and its people," Puri said. "This action sends a strong message that terrorism will be firmly dealt with."
Operation Sindoor and Support for Armed Forces
The recent escalation of violence between the two nations included India's military retaliation under 'Operation Sindoor,' where Indian forces targeted nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes aimed at disrupting terror groups like Jaish-e-Mohammad, based in Bahawalpur, were a direct response to the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan retaliated with drone strikes and multiple ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, which were effectively countered by India.Puri condemned Pakistan's actions, calling them "deplorable" and commending India's armed forces for their effective response. He further praised the government's handling of the situation, emphasizing that the industry fully supports the government’s actions.
"National security is paramount, and it is crucial for ensuring sustained economic progress. The government's calibrated and targeted measures are in the best interest of the nation," Puri stated.
Industry’s Commitment to Economic Progress
Amid these challenging times, Puri reassured that India’s economy remains resilient, and businesses are fully committed to doing what is necessary to maintain steady economic growth. He reiterated that dismantling Pakistan’s support system for terrorism is a key priority for the country and must continue to be addressed."The industry is fully behind the government's efforts," Puri concluded. "We understand that national security is the foundation of economic prosperity, and we will continue to support measures that ensure both."
India’s strong stance on national security, alongside a robust economic commitment, reflects a nation determined to secure its future while dealing firmly with external threats.
