Clash Erupts in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur as Police Attempt to Arrest Former TMC Panchayat Member

Kolkata, March 1 – A violent clash broke out in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district when police attempted to arrest a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) panchayat member, Mujibur Rahman, on Saturday. The incident, which took place in the Goalpokhar area of Chopra, left several policemen injured.

According to officials, a police team had gone to detain Rahman, who is wanted in multiple cases under the Arms Act. However, a section of local villagers allegedly obstructed the arrest, resisting law enforcement’s attempt to take Rahman into custody. Reports suggest that the villagers even tried to forcibly release him from the police vehicle, leading to a scuffle that resulted in injuries to some officers.

Following the unrest, police have arrested 11 individuals linked to the incident. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations into the violent obstruction of justice.

Meanwhile, local TMC MLA Hamidul Rahman has contested the police’s claims, asserting that Mujibur Rahman is innocent. Speaking to a regional news channel, he accused law enforcement of attempting to arrest Rahman without a valid warrant.

"Some locals told me that he was never involved in any criminal activities. He was a former gram panchayat member. The police came and vandalized his house, which escalated the situation," said the MLA.

The situation remains tense in the area, with law enforcement keeping a close watch to prevent further disturbances.
