Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, in a statement to the Assembly today, said that the February 5 explosion at Mynsngat–Thangsko was caused by illegal mining involving explosive materials. The death toll from the illegal coal mine explosion in the East Jaintia Hills has risen to 33. Rescue operations have been completed, and relief and compensation for affected families are being provided. A Special Investigation Team is investigating the case, and seven arrests have already been made as authorities intensify action against illegal mining. The state has also established a Judicial Inquiry Commission, headed by retired Justice R. S. Chauhan, to investigate the incident, determine responsibility, and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents. The commission is expected to submit its report within six months.
