Kochi, Feb 26: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a leading name in India’s shipbuilding and ship repair sector, has taken a significant step forward in sustainable maritime technology with the steel-cutting ceremony for a state-of-the-art hybrid Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for North Star Shipping (Aberdeen) Limited, UK.
The event was marked by the presence of James Bradford, Chief Technology Officer of North Star Shipping, who officially commenced the steel cutting. Senior CSL officials, including Sreejith K Narayanan (Director-Operations) and Harikrishnan S (Executive Director-Shipbuilding), were also present at the ceremony.
North Star Shipping, headquartered in Aberdeen, is at the forefront of the offshore wind sector, focusing on sustainable energy solutions. The 68-meter hybrid-electric SOV, designed by VARD AS, Norway, is the first of two vessels constructed by CSL for North Star.

- Advanced Propulsion & Accessibility: Fitted with Voith electric-cycloidal propulsors and an SMST Walk-to-Work system for seamless personnel and equipment transfers.
- Capacity: Designed to accommodate 54 personnel, including wind turbine maintenance specialists and operational crew.
- Enhanced Functionality: Operates as a logistics hub and warehouse to streamline offshore wind farm maintenance.
