Kolkata, May 12 – Long before she became a celebrated figure in the nation's military history, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army had already left an indelible mark on the minds of thousands of young students in West Bengal. Her inspiring presence and guidance during a career mentorship webinar in 2022 showcased her leadership and motivational prowess, years before she gained national acclaim for her role in Operation Sindoor.

Early Inspiration During Kolkata Posting

In 2022, while posted at Fort William — the Eastern Command headquarters of the Indian Army — Colonel Qureshi participated in a career guidance webinar organised by the West Bengal Minority Development and Finance Corporation (WBMDFC). Speaking to PTI, WBMDFC Chairman and Managing Director PB Salim recalled the lasting impression she made during the event.

“She may have joined as a guide for our Career Guidance Series, but she left the platform as a hero,” Salim said, remembering how Qureshi had mentored thousands of students and professionals who were then grappling with uncertainty during the pandemic.

Empowering Youth and Breaking Gender Barriers

During the session, Qureshi shared her personal journey of choosing the armed forces over a scientific career, driven by family tradition and her own determination. Her words struck a chord, especially with young girls aspiring to break into male-dominated fields.

"I wanted to be a scientist, but I also nurtured the dream of being in the army... when the entry option came, I immediately took the plunge," she had told the attendees.

Encouraging her audience to stay focused and ignore naysayers, she said, “If you wish to wear the uniform, work hard for it. Stay away from negativity. Think you can do it.”

She further highlighted the importance of time management, physical and mental fitness, and the courage of conviction as critical qualities for success in the forces.

Lasting Legacy and Operation Sindoor

Reflecting on the webinar, Salim noted how Colonel Qureshi spoke with students across communities for nearly two hours, discussing study habits, resilience, and the importance of self-belief. “She encouraged more girls to join the forces and affirmed that women can also serve at the frontline,” he added.

Now a national icon following her leadership role in Operation Sindoor, Colonel Qureshi is being celebrated as part of India’s precise and proportionate military response against terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The operation was launched after the Pahalgam attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.

Alongside Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed the media on May 7, detailing the strike’s objectives and reaffirming India’s commitment to national security through measured military action.

Nation Pays Tribute

Salim emphasized that the pride in Qureshi’s achievements extends beyond her military role. “It is a matter of pride for the entire country. Our armed forces are defending us, and we salute every member,” he said.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi’s journey — from guiding students in Kolkata to leading on the national frontlines — serves as a powerful testament to dedication, discipline, and the transformative impact of leadership.
