Mass voluntary blood donation to mark V-Day

At least 614 young people across Mizoram celebrated Valentine's Day on Saturday by donating blood for their fellow human beings who needed it, as the Association for Voluntary Blood Donation (AVBD), Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS), and the state National Health Mission (NHM) jointly organized a Valentine's Day blood donation event with the theme "Show Love, Give Blood".
AVBD leader K. Zothanpara said the main event for mass V-Day blood donation was held at the Dawrpui Multipurpose Hall in Aizawl, with famous national-level footballer JJ Lalpekhlua MLA inaugurating the blood donation camp and also donating his blood. Lalpekhlua made a passionate appeal to the youth of Mizoram to donate blood to save lives. All the blood donors were presented with roses.
Zothanpara said that the blood donation on Valentine's Day was first organized by a well-known television anchor, Zikpuii Pachuau, in 2010, with the theme "Blood for your Valentine," and she handed over the event to the AVBD, which continued it every year until now. The event, which was initially held only in Aizawl city, began to be taken up in all the districts across the state.
The largest unit of blood was donated in 2020, when 1,131 youths voluntarily donated blood on Valentine's Day, followed by 1,113 and 1,105 in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
In total, 11,621 units of blood have been donated since 2010 until last year, he said.
At least 614 people have so far donated blood across the state on Saturday at 5 pm, with the Aizawl district contributing 348 units of blood, followed by the south Mizoram district of Lunglei, where 86 youths voluntarily donated blood, and the Champhai district bordering Myanmar, which contributed 80 units.
