Cong candidates pull out of race in 8 seats in Junagadh civic body, BJP bags them without fight

Junagadh, February 3 (PTI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to win eight seats uncontested in the Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JMC) elections after Congress candidates withdrew their nominations, election officials confirmed on Monday.

While an official declaration is expected on February 4—the final day for withdrawal of nominations—the ruling BJP has already claimed victory in these seats due to a lack of opposition. These uncontested seats are spread across two wards, leaving BJP as the sole contender.

Polling for JMC, 66 municipalities, and three taluka panchayats in Gujarat is scheduled for February 16. The nomination filing deadline was February 1, while scrutiny was conducted on February 3, as per the State Election Commission’s schedule.

The Junagadh Municipal Corporation consists of 60 seats distributed across 15 wards, with four representatives in each ward. In the 2019 elections, the BJP dominated, securing 54 out of 60 seats.

Returning officers of wards No. 3 and 14 confirmed that Congress candidates withdrew from eight seats, ensuring BJP’s unchallenged win. "Only four BJP candidates remain in the fray in Ward No. 3 after the Congress contestants withdrew their nominations. A formal announcement will be made on February 4," said Charansinh Gohil, the returning officer for Ward No. 3.

Similarly, Meera Sompura, the returning officer for Ward No. 14, confirmed that only BJP candidates remain in the race after Congress withdrew its nominees.

BJP’s Junagadh city president, Punit Sharma, revealed that party leaders were in contact with the Congress candidates who withdrew their nominations. "These Congress candidates withdrew their nominations in favor of BJP candidates. As a result, the BJP has won eight seats in Wards 3 and 14 uncontested," Sharma stated.

With this development, BJP has secured an early advantage in the upcoming civic polls, further solidifying its dominance in Junagadh.
