Congress Gears Up for Assam Assembly Elections, Vows to Counter BJP's 'Corruption and Division' Politics
New Delhi, Feb 27 – Senior Congress leaders from Assam convened in the capital on Thursday to chart their strategy for the upcoming state assembly elections. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed confidence that the people of Assam would reject the BJP’s politics of "corruption, division, and vendetta" in next year's polls.
The high-level meeting, held at the Congress's Indira Bhawan headquarters, was attended by former party chief Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretary (organization) K C Venugopal, AICC in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Congress chief Bhupen Bora, and other key state unit leaders.
Congress Prepares to Challenge BJP in Assam
During the discussions, party leaders emphasized the need for unity and an aggressive campaign to dethrone the BJP, which has been in power in Assam for the past decade. Kharge, in a post on X, asserted that the state's 3.5 crore citizens are looking toward Congress for change.
"In a year, the people of Assam shall discard the politics of corruption, division, and vendetta. No amount of selective media-driven propaganda can shake their resolve for transformation," Kharge stated.
The Congress is eyeing a comeback in Assam, where the BJP has been ruling for two consecutive terms. The elections for the 126-member state assembly are scheduled for the first half of 2026, with the current assembly’s tenure ending on May 20.
BJP vs Congress: A Heated Battle Ahead
The Congress has mounted a strong campaign against the BJP government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, particularly on allegations of corruption. Meanwhile, the political rivalry has intensified, with Sarma accusing Gaurav Gogoi’s wife of having links with Pakistan and the ISI—an allegation Congress has dismissed as an attempt to silence Gogoi, who has been vocal against the chief minister.
Congress to Review Strategy for Kerala Elections
Following the Assam strategy session, the Congress leadership has scheduled another crucial meeting on Friday to discuss its approach for the Kerala Assembly elections next year. This comes amid internal debates within the Kerala Congress after a recent article by Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, in which he seemingly praised the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government for its efforts to attract investment. The article has sparked criticism from some Congress leaders in the state.
With back-to-back election strategies in focus, Congress is gearing up for a fierce battle against the BJP in both Assam and Kerala, aiming to reclaim lost ground.
