Jairam Ramesh Urges PM Modi to Take Political Leadership Into Confidence Following Ceasefire Agreement

New Delhi, May 10 — Following the announcement of an immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the Congress party has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene an all-party meeting and initiate a special session of Parliament to discuss the developments over the past 18 days.

Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, stated that the political leadership must be taken into confidence at this critical juncture. In a post on social media platform X, Ramesh said, "In view of the unprecedented announcements from Washington DC, there is now a need, more than ever before, for the Prime Minister to chair an all-party meeting and take political parties into confidence."

He further demanded that the government call a special session of Parliament to deliberate on the chain of events starting from the brutal Pahalgam terror attack up to the present ceasefire development. "This session would not only review recent events but also help demonstrate a collective resolve on the way forward," Ramesh added.

The ceasefire announcement was made by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who confirmed that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both India and Pakistan have agreed to halt all military actions on land, air, and sea effective from 5 PM Saturday.

This development came soon after US President Donald Trump announced a “full and immediate” ceasefire between the two nations, crediting US-led mediation efforts. The announcement followed talks involving US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir.

Secretary Rubio also echoed the ceasefire confirmation through a post on X, reinforcing the diplomatic momentum that led to the breakthrough.

The Congress party’s call for institutional dialogue and parliamentary engagement marks a significant political response, urging unity and transparency as the country navigates this tense period of Indo-Pak relations.
