Charan Singh Sapra Slams BJP's "Double Engine" Claim, Promises Roadmap for Economic Revival

Guwahati, May 18 – The Congress party is conducting a comprehensive study to assess the economic difficulties faced by the people of Assam under the BJP-led government, aiming to release its findings within the next two months. This initiative comes in preparation for the 2026 Assam assembly elections, according to All India Congress Committee (AICC) national spokesperson Charan Singh Sapra.

Speaking on the party's poll strategy, Sapra criticized the BJP’s so-called "double engine government", dubbing it instead a "trouble engine government". He alleged that the ruling party’s governance has prioritized polarization over progress.

Focus on Debt and Welfare Schemes

Sapra stated that the Congress study would outline both the current financial distress and propose viable solutions, including a forward-looking roadmap for revenue generation.

“A huge debt has been incurred to support cash-driven beneficiary schemes in Assam. This is a major concern for the future stability of the state. Our report will offer a consistent and comprehensive plan to address these issues,” Sapra explained.

He pointed out that Assam’s annual borrowings have surged by nearly 78 percent over three years since 2019-20, while economic growth indicators such as GSDP and per capita income have slowed, as reflected in the state’s Economic Survey for 2024–25.

BJP Accused of Rhetoric and Polarisation

Sharpening his attack on the ruling party, Sapra remarked, “The BJP brands itself as a double engine government, but it is a trouble engine government in reality. Their agenda is built on lies, rhetoric, and jugglery.”

He went further to label Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as a master of such political tactics, coining phrases like “Bharatiya Jhuth Party”, “Bharatiya Jumla Party”, and “Bharatiya Jugglery Party” to describe the BJP’s alleged governance style.

Congress Seeks Unified Front

Regarding Congress’s strategy for the upcoming polls, Sapra acknowledged that leaders like the Leader of the Opposition, the state president, MPs, and MLAs are currently acting individually. However, he emphasized the need for a united campaign.

“The central leadership, including Rahul Gandhi, is deeply invested in Assam. Senior leaders have agreed to work together, and the Congress narrative will focus on real issues such as corruption, which directly impacts everyday life,” he said.

Sapra revealed that in the coming 8–10 months, Congress plans to bring forward a major issue that will resonate deeply with the people of Assam, although he did not share further details.

Rejects BJP’s Allegations on Ticket Distribution

Responding to the BJP's accusation that Congress sold tickets during the recent panchayat elections, Sapra dismissed it as a “stage-managed” tactic aimed at tarnishing the opposition's image.

“It's a baseless allegation and part of BJP’s larger strategy of character assassination through social media manipulation,” he asserted.

As the Congress gears up its campaign machinery, the findings of its ongoing economic study are expected to play a key role in shaping its narrative against the BJP in Assam’s 2026 elections.
