Opposition Accuses LDF Regime of Passing on Burden of Financial Mismanagement to Public
Thiruvananthapuram, April 1 — The Kerala Congress has strongly opposed the state government's decision to implement a sharp hike in land tax, accusing the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) of offloading its financial mismanagement onto ordinary citizens. As announced in the state budget presented by Finance Minister K N Balagopal in February 2025, the revised land tax rates—reflecting a 50% increase in property tax—came into effect from April 1, 2025.
V D Satheesan Calls It a Burden on the Poor
Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan took to Facebook to lash out at the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government, blaming corruption, embezzlement, and administrative failures for the current financial state of Kerala. He noted that the government plans to collect ₹100 crore through this tax hike alone, terming the move as an added hardship for the poor already struggling with inflation and unemployment."The burden of the financial crisis caused by the government's corruption, embezzlement, backdoor appointments, and mismanagement has now been imposed on the people," Satheesan wrote.
Criticism of Welfare Cuts and Pending Pensions
Satheesan further pointed out that welfare pensions have not been increased for the past five years and that several dues remain unpaid. He alleged that the government has slashed development and welfare schemes, citing the economic crisis as justification."People Will Give a Warning Soon"
In a sharp warning, the opposition leader said that public patience is wearing thin and a political reckoning may not be far off.As of now, the Kerala government has not issued a response to these allegations."Time is not far away for people to give a warning to this corrupt regime," he warned.
