New Delhi, Feb 28 – Senior Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, held a high-level meeting on Friday with key leaders from Kerala to strategize for the upcoming assembly elections in 2026. The discussions focused on strengthening the party's organizational structure and chalking out a roadmap for reclaiming power in the state.
Kharge, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), expressed confidence in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) securing victory, asserting that the people of Kerala would reject both "oppressive" and "communal" political fronts.
"Change is inevitable in Kerala. Congress has built the development paradigm and welfare model of Kerala, and we will do everything possible to bring our UDF to power. Next year, people will defeat both the oppressive and communal fronts in the state," Kharge posted.
High-Level Meeting with Senior Congress Leaders
The strategy session saw the participation of prominent Congress leaders, including former party chief Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Kerala Congress chief K Sudhakaran, and CLP leader in the Kerala Assembly V D Satheesan. AICC in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi, senior leader Ramesh Chennithala, Chief Whip and MP K Suresh, MP Shashi Tharoor, and Kerala Mahila Congress president and MP Jebi Mather were also part of the deliberations. The Congress, currently the main opposition in Kerala, aims to unseat the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the CPI(M) in the assembly elections scheduled for March-April next year.
Controversy Over Shashi Tharoor’s Article
The meeting also came against the backdrop of a controversy involving Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, whose recent article in a newspaper seemingly praised the LDF government’s efforts to improve the investment climate in Kerala. The article sparked criticism within the party, with some leaders questioning the basis of his remarks.Tharoor later defended himself, stating that his views had been misrepresented in media reports. Additionally, his comments in a Malayalam podcast, perceived as positioning himself for a leadership role in the state, further unsettled sections of the party’s state leadership.
The CPI(M), on the other hand, welcomed Tharoor’s observations, adding to the political discourse surrounding the issue.
As Congress gears up for a crucial electoral battle, party leaders remain focused on consolidating their strategy to regain public support and challenge the incumbent LDF government in Kerala.
