Bhubaneswar, Feb 27 – The Congress party in Odisha has warned the state government sternly, threatening statewide protests if power tariffs are increased in the upcoming financial year 2025-26.
Addressing a press conference, senior Congress leader and former minister Panchanan Kanungo highlighted that the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) is currently conducting hearings on proposals for a tariff hike submitted by various power supply stakeholders. He expressed concerns that domestic consumers could face higher electricity bills if the proposals are accepted.
Kanungo alleged that the bulk electricity supplier and distribution companies are pushing for a power tariff hike. He criticized the ruling BJP for failing to fulfill its 2024 election promise of providing 300 units of free electricity to the people of Odisha. Instead, he pointed out that a hike of 12.42 paise per unit is being considered.
"We are warning the government—if even a single paise increase the power tariff, the Congress party, along with its student, women, and youth wings, will take to the streets in protest," Kanungo declared.
Joining him at the press conference, Youth Congress leader Yashir Nawaz accused the Odisha government of favoritism towards industrialists. According to state assembly records, he revealed that the government has waived electricity dues worth ₹4,097 crore for 14 industries over the past decade, while another ₹1,096 crore remains pending against 23 industrial units.
Nawaz questioned the justification for a tariff hike when such large sums remain unpaid. "Instead of burdening common consumers, the government should reject these tariff hike proposals and immediately implement the 300-unit free power scheme as promised," he demanded.
With tensions rising over the issue, the Congress party has signaled its intent to escalate protests if the government proceeds with any increase in electricity rates.
