Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, March 7: Tensions flared outside the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Rudrapur as Congress workers, led by Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand Assembly Yashpal Arya, staged a protest against the alleged police harassment of party leader Sarwar Khan.

The protest erupted following an incident where Sarwar Khan was taken to the Kiccha police station for interrogation after being accused of attacking a man during the recently concluded cooperative elections. Enraged by what they termed as political vendetta, Congress leaders, including Kiccha MLA Tilak Raj Behad, marched to the SSP’s office on Thursday, demanding a meeting with the officer.

However, as the demonstrators attempted to enter the SSP’s chamber, they were stopped at the office gate, leading to a heated altercation with police personnel. The standoff, which escalated into a scuffle, continued for several hours.

The Congress leaders accused the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kiccha police station of acting as a "BJP agent" and targeting Sarwar Khan unfairly. Their primary demand was the officer’s removal.

As the protest showed no signs of abating, the police detained the demonstrators and moved them to the Sidcul police station. The agitation was eventually called off after police officials assured an impartial investigation into the matter.

This incident underscores the ongoing political tensions in Uttarakhand, particularly in the wake of the cooperative elections
