New Delhi, May 17 — The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday confirmed its participation in the government’s international outreach efforts following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, while reiterating its demand for a special session of Parliament to discuss the matter.
In a statement, the CPI(M) said it had "reservations" about the government’s approach but decided to take part in the all-party delegations “in the larger national interest.”
CPI(M) Seeks Parliamentary Discussion on Pahalgam Attack
Terming the government’s refusal to convene a special session of Parliament as "unfortunate", the party emphasized the need for transparency and public accountability.“We urge the government to immediately convene the Parliament session, apprise the people of India, and also provide opportunities to seek clarifications, if any,” the CPI(M) said.
Delegation Participation Despite Concerns
The CPI(M) confirmed that Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas will represent the party in the international outreach delegations being sent to various countries. These delegations, comprising MPs from multiple parties, will highlight India’s firm stance against terrorism.“The government has called the leader of our party in the Rajya Sabha and informed him about the various delegations. Despite our reservations mentioned above and while reiterating our demands, we feel obliged to be part of such a delegation in national interest,” the CPI(M) said.
Criticism of Selective Briefings to BJP-NDA States
The Left party criticized the central government for briefing only BJP-NDA ruled states about Operation Sindoor, calling the move discriminatory.“We demand that the government call a meeting of all the chief ministers of the country, including those from the opposition, for such a briefing,” the statement read.
Call for Responsible Governance
The CPI(M) also cautioned against attempts to communalise the situation and called for an end to divisive rhetoric by ruling party leaders and state ministers.“The government is first accountable to the people of India and should be transparent in its actions. The campaign to communalise the situation must stop forthwith,” the party stated.
Government’s Outreach Initiative
Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs announced that seven all-party delegations would travel to key global partner nations, including UN Security Council members, later this month. The delegations aim to present India’s unified and resolute approach against terrorism. According to the ministry, these teams will carry “India's strong message of zero tolerance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations” to the international community.
