CPI(M) Seeks Special Parliament Session, Demands PM Modi's Clarification on Ceasefire and Pah...webp

New Delhi, May 12 — The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has joined opposition calls urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene a special session of Parliament to address national concerns following the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire announcement and the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby made the appeal in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, highlighting the need for Modi’s "personal participation" to clarify the government's stance on these critical developments.

Ceasefire Raises Questions of Foreign Mediation

Referring to the May 10 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, Baby expressed concern over the sequence of its public disclosure. The understanding between the two nations was officially confirmed through a statement by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, indicating that military operations would cease on land, air, and sea.

However, CPI(M) has taken issue with the fact that the first announcement came not from Indian authorities, but from US President Donald Trump via social media. Trump claimed that the truce was brokered by the United States — a revelation that CPI(M) says contradicts India's long-held foreign policy of bilateral resolution without third-party mediation.

“This situation requires clear and authoritative clarification from the highest levels of our government,” Baby stated in his letter, emphasizing the urgency of parliamentary discussion on the issue.

Pahalgam Terror Attack: Nation's Conscience Shaken

MA Baby also raised alarm over the “heinous attack” in Pahalgam, which he said has “deeply shaken the conscience of the nation.” While acknowledging the unified response from citizens across India, he noted that this moment of solidarity risks being diluted by divisive campaigns.

He criticized what he described as "virulent campaigns of hatred, jingoism, and misinformation" spread by sections of the media and social platforms, warning that such actions sow confusion and unrest.

Opposition’s Growing Demand for Parliamentary Debate

The CPI(M)’s demand aligns with calls from other opposition parties, including the Congress, for a special Parliament session. Baby underscored that these issues — particularly national security, terrorism, and foreign diplomacy — require a transparent and unified approach through institutional debate.

“In light of these issues, I urge you to convene a special session of Parliament,” Baby wrote, reiterating the CPI(M)'s earlier appeal and calling on the Prime Minister to personally address lawmakers.

As tensions ease along the border, the political heat in New Delhi appears to be rising, with the spotlight now on the government’s next move.
