Mumbai, February 12 A man was allegedly beaten up by three individuals who accused him of participating in a cricket tournament in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, despite being an "outsider," a police official said on Thursday.
Jayesh Janardhan Khot (36) sustained serious injuries in the assault that took place in the early hours of Sunday in Aare, near Guhagar, which is about 290 kilometers from here, the official added.
"Khot, who resides in Kalyan in Thane and works for Rapido, had gone to his hometown, Guhagar, to participate in a tournament as part of the Adarsh Krida Mandal cricket team. Other cricket teams in the village raised objections, claiming that he was an outsider and not a local resident," the official said.
In the early hours of Sunday, Khot was allegedly attacked by Omkar Borkar, Avinash Shetye, and Saiprasad Borkar when the victim was sitting with his family outside his house, the official said.
"They abused Khot and hit him with a steel rod and repeatedly punched him. They fled after Khot fell down, seriously injured. He is currently in hospital, and doctors have said that he is out of danger," the official informed.
Based on a complaint filed by Khot's relatives, a case was registered at the Guhagar police station against Omkar Borkar, Avinash Shetye, and Saiprasad Borkar under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and other offenses.
"The accused persons filed an application in court to seek a stay on their arrest. Accordingly, the court has stayed their arrest until February 20," the official said.
Meanwhile, Khot's elderly mother protested at the Guhagar police station on Wednesday, demanding that the three accused be arrested.
She said that she will approach the court for justice.
