February 14, New Delhi — Facing one of its worst fuel shortages in recent years, Cuba is seeing a growing shift towards electric vehicles and bicycles as people seek alternative ways to travel amid severe economic challenges.
Electric tricycles have emerged as one of the most common modes of transport on the streets of Havana, serving local routes and helping mobility in congested areas. Operated both privately and by the state, these vehicles vary in cost and are used to carry passengers, light cargo, and more.
Imports of motorcycles, tricycles, quadricycles, and electric cars have risen significantly in recent years, largely driven by persistent fuel shortages. The country also has state-owned firms assembling such vehicles for private users and public services.
The administration of Donald Trump designated Cuba a security threat, halted oil supplies from Venezuela, and warned of tariffs on nations that provide fuel to the island.
