Melbourne, February 27 – Former Australian cricketer David Boon is set to step down from his role as an ICC match referee following the conclusion of the Champions Trophy. The 64-year-old will take on a new role with Cricket Australia (CA), joining its board as a representative of Cricket Tasmania from March 28.
Boon, currently the chairperson of the Cricket Tasmania board, will succeed Paul Green in this position.
Expressing his enthusiasm over Boon's appointment, CA chair Mike Baird highlighted the former batter’s wealth of experience in both playing and administration. "David has continued to gain first-hand insights into international cricket in his role as an ICC match referee, and this will be invaluable as we navigate the game's rapidly changing landscape," Baird stated, as quoted by cricket.com.au.
Boon has been serving as an ICC match referee since 2011. A prolific cricketer during his playing days, he represented Australia in 107 Test matches and 181 One-Day Internationals, amassing a total of 13,386 international runs. He was also a key member of Australia’s 1987 World Cup-winning squad in India.
Post-retirement, Boon contributed to the game as a national selector between 2000 and 2011 before taking up his referee duties. His transition to the CA board marks another significant step in his long-standing involvement with Australian cricket.
