Day one glitches in Mantralaya facial recognition system delay staff entry, create long queues

Mumbai, Feb 3 (PTI): The first day of the facial recognition system rollout at Mantralaya, Maharashtra's government secretariat, was marked by long queues and confusion, as several employees struggled to gain entry due to technical glitches.

The new system, designed to enhance security and transparency by integrating facial recognition with RFID access cards, encountered significant issues. Many staff members found themselves unable to access the premises as the system failed to recognize faces, leading to repeated authentication attempts.

According to officials, the Information and Technology Department had provided data for 1,500 officers and employees, which was fed into the system before its activation. The system was installed at all entrance gates by the implementing company. However, on the first day, many struggled to gain entry.

"The system could not read faces properly, which caused long queues. The verification process had to be attempted multiple times," an official stated.

Accredited journalists and those holding Home Department passes also faced issues, initially being denied entry. They were later permitted inside after discussions with officials.

In response to the chaos, the state government assured that necessary steps were being taken to streamline the system. A statement from the government emphasized that all officers, employees, and public representatives must register their facial details to avoid future delays.

Given Mantralaya’s status as a high-security zone, the government has prioritized the facial recognition system as a crucial security measure. Authorities have now directed the responsible departments to upload complete and accurate data to ensure smooth operation moving forward.

Way Forward

With technical refinements expected in the coming days, the government aims to iron out issues and fully integrate the system to bolster security at Maharashtra's administrative headquarters.
