New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – With just days left for the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections, law enforcement agencies have registered over 1,000 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), an official confirmed on Monday.
The cases were recorded between January 7, when the MCC came into effect, and February 2. During this period, authorities also arrested a staggering 33,434 individuals under various legal provisions, including those under the Excise Act, according to an official statement.
In a bid to ensure fair and peaceful elections, the Delhi Police have ramped up surveillance at border checkpoints and intensified crackdowns on illegal activities, targeting the smuggling of arms, liquor, and drugs.
As per the statement, Delhi Police have documented 1,049 cases of MCC violations and seized 462 illegal firearms along with 510 cartridges. Additionally, 482 individuals have been arrested under the Arms Act.
Authorities have confiscated a substantial 1,08,258 litres of illicit liquor, leading to the arrest of 1,353 people. They have also seized 196.602 kg of narcotics worth over ₹77.9 crore and over 1,200 banned injections, with 177 individuals taken into custody.
Further, law enforcement agencies have recovered ₹11.23 crore in cash and 37.39 kg of silver.
Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly is scheduled for February 5, with vote counting set to take place on February 8.
