New Delhi, February 9 Ashok Kumar, an IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, who was part of the 2006 batch, was appointed as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi on Monday.
The Election Commission stated that Kumar must assume his new role "immediately," and the Delhi government must submit a compliance report to the Commission within a week.
He replaces R Alice Vaz, who was transferred out of Delhi last month. She was asked to continue as the Delhi CEO until a new officer was appointed.
Kumar was previously serving as a Secretary in the General Administration Department of the Delhi government before his new role with the election panel.
He held various important positions in the Delhi government during his previous tenures, including Secretary (Education) and Additional Commissioner of the MCD.
He also served in various capacities as an AGMUT cadre officer in Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The election authority had earlier sought a panel of three IAS officers for appointing a new Chief Election Officer.
Typically, IAS officers from the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, UTs) cadre are appointed as CEOs in Delhi, Puducherry, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, and Mizoram.
