New Delhi, February 27 – In the wake of a recent fire at a restaurant in Khan Market, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) has announced plans to inspect the no-objection certificates (NOCs) of shops in the area. An official confirmed the move on Thursday, highlighting concerns over fire safety compliance in the upscale market.

The decision follows a fire that broke out in the early hours of February 22. The incident, which occurred at a restaurant, did not result in any casualties. According to DFS, they received a distress call at 2:56 a.m., prompting the deployment of six fire tenders. The fire had originated in temporary bar and dining structures located on the terrace of two adjacent restaurants.

Firefighters successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading further in the ground-plus-two-storey buildings occupied by the establishments.

A senior DFS official stated that while the issue of fire NOC procurement is currently under judicial review, the department regularly urges shopkeepers to secure the necessary certification. In light of the recent fire, DFS teams will now conduct inspections in Khan Market to assess compliance.

Sanjiv Mehra, President of the Khan Market Traders' Association, emphasized the need for stricter enforcement against businesses operating without a fire NOC. He noted that non-compliant establishments pose serious risks and impact other businesses in the market.

"The Delhi High Court has granted a stay to some restaurant owners in Khan Market who do not possess an NOC. However, incidents like these affect the entire business ecosystem," Mehra stated.

Authorities are now focusing on ensuring stricter fire safety compliance to prevent future incidents in one of Delhi’s busiest commercial hubs.
