₹3.86 Crore Allocated for Rescue Readiness as Monsoon Approaches
New Delhi, May 15 – In a bid to bolster flood preparedness during the upcoming monsoon season, the Delhi government is planning to hire boats, divers, and other emergency equipment for deployment along the Yamuna River, officials announced on Thursday. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department, which has already initiated preliminary preparations, currently operates a fleet of 40 boats. These are typically deployed for relief distribution and rescue missions in flood-affected areas.
An official revealed that the department plans to augment its resources by bringing in 20-inch and 25-inch aluminium boats specifically tailored for efficient rescue operations. The estimated cost for hiring divers, motorboats, boatmen, and necessary machinery is approximately ₹3.86 crore.
"Preparing for flood season requires coordination with multiple agencies, prepping up control rooms and emergency numbers," said another official. "The flood control order is expected to be issued by June 1, and inter-departmental meetings are underway to ensure a swift and effective response."
The urgency stems from the devastating impact of the 2023 monsoon, which saw one of Delhi’s worst flood-like situations in recent history. More than 25,000 residents were evacuated as heavy rains inundated several low-lying areas.
This year’s measures aim to avoid similar chaos, with proactive equipment deployment and streamlined communication among emergency services.
