New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): The Delhi High Court on Monday sought a response from Google following a plea by Aaradhya Bachchan, urging the court to decide on the removal of misleading content about her health without hearing from unresponsive YouTube channels.
Justice Mini Pushkarna issued a notice regarding Aaradhya’s application, which sought an ex-parte proceeding against the defendants who had failed to appear in court. The plea also requested a summary judgment in her favor. The matter has now been scheduled for further hearing on March 17.
This development comes in an ongoing lawsuit filed by Aaradhya, the daughter of Bollywood actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, along with her father.
Earlier, on April 20, 2023, the court had issued an interim order restraining multiple YouTube channels from spreading false and misleading information about the minor’s health. The court had criticized such content, stating that spreading disinformation about a child reflected "morbid perversity." It had also directed Google to take down certain videos that falsely claimed Aaradhya was "critically ill" or "no more."
The lawsuit had named several YouTube channels, including Bollywood Time, Bolly Pakora, Bolly Samosa, and Bollywood Shine, accusing them of disseminating completely false videos about Aaradhya’s health and personal life. The plaintiffs argued that such content damaged the reputation of the Bachchan family, whose name was a protectable trademark symbolizing high moral values.
The lawsuit further alleged that the misleading videos were solely created for shock value, to gain instant popularity, and for financial gains at the cost of violating a minor’s privacy.
The court’s decision on March 17 will determine whether the matter proceeds without the participation of the accused YouTube channels.
