AAP Legislators Raise Concerns Over Prolonged Outages in Several Delhi Areas
In a move highlighting growing public discontent over frequent power cuts in Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs submitted formal notices to the Delhi Assembly secretary on Tuesday, calling for an urgent discussion on the ongoing electricity outages affecting multiple localities across the national capital.
AAP legislators Sanjeev Jha and Kuldeep Kumar separately wrote to Delhi's Power Minister, Ashish Sood, expressing deep concerns about persistent electricity disruptions and urging immediate government intervention.
Power Outage Issue Raised by AAP MLAs
Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha highlighted the plight of residents in Jagatpur village, his assembly constituency, which experienced a significant power outage on March 28. Jha emphasized how these outages severely impacted households, disrupted local businesses, and affected critical services.
In his notice under Rule 54 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Legislative Assembly, Jha stated, "Despite complaints, no immediate resolution was provided. I urge the Minister of Power to provide a detailed explanation and outline immediate steps to prevent such occurrences in the future."
Similarly, MLA Kuldeep Kumar submitted an adjournment motion notice under Rule 59, stressing the urgent need to address the power crisis within the legislative assembly. Kumar wrote, "These outages have caused severe inconvenience to residents, disrupted businesses, and hampered essential services. The situation demands immediate attention and a thorough response from the government."
Political Blame Game Intensifies Over Power Management
The ongoing electricity issue has triggered sharp exchanges between AAP and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which came to power in Delhi after the February elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats.
Senior AAP leader and former Delhi chief minister Atishi accused the BJP-led administration of mismanaging the electricity distribution system, noting that Delhi experienced uninterrupted power supply during AAP’s decade-long governance.
Atishi questioned, "How is it that in 10 years, there were no outages, but within a month of BJP rule, power cuts are back? This means only one thing: the BJP doesn't know how to run the government. They neither have the intention nor the capability to serve the people of Delhi."
Countering these allegations, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva dismissed AAP's claims and instead accused the previous government of corruption and inefficiency. Sachdeva asserted, "BJP-ruled cities like Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Bangalore have uninterrupted electricity supply. Even Uttar Pradesh, once known for poor electricity management, now enjoys stable power supply. Providing 24-hour electricity is a government's duty, not a favour."
Arvind Kejriwal Criticises BJP Over Power Cuts
AAP National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also weighed in on the issue, criticizing the BJP through a social media post on platform X. Kejriwal remarked, "We had set up the power system in Delhi with great difficulty, working hard to ensure uninterrupted supply. There were no power cuts for 10 years. In just over a month, they have ruined the system."
First Budget Session Amid Controversy
This controversy emerges amid the ongoing first budget session of Delhi's eighth legislative assembly. The power crisis marks the BJP’s first significant administrative challenge since regaining power in the national capital after 27 years.
The discussion initiated by AAP MLAs reflects escalating public pressure for the government to promptly address the power cuts affecting the city’s daily life and business operations.
