Delhi Police books CM Atishi for MCC 'violation'

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI): Delhi Police on Tuesday registered an FIR against Chief Minister Atishi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Kalkaji, for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and obstructing public servants on duty, an official confirmed.

According to police reports, Atishi was present at Fateh Singh Marg along with AAP supporters when an officer was allegedly obstructed from carrying out his duty. Additionally, two AAP members reportedly assaulted a police constable during the incident.

The FIR was lodged at Govindpuri Police Station under various sections of law, and a probe is underway, the official stated.

Police Detail the Incident

Authorities claim that Atishi, accompanied by 50-70 supporters and 10 vehicles, refused to vacate the area despite instructions aligned with MCC guidelines. "She and her supporters obstructed an officer from performing his duty," said the police official.

The Delhi Police’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle for the Southeast district reported that a gathering was noticed at Baba Fateh Singh Marg in Govindpuri around 12:59 AM. "Head Constable Kaushal Pal responded to the scene and started recording the event. AAP members Ashmit and Sagar Mehta then obstructed and assaulted him," read the post.

Atishi Hits Back at Election Commission

Reacting to the FIR, Atishi took to X to criticize the Election Commission, alleging bias in the handling of political activities. She claimed that her BJP opponent from Kalkaji, Ramesh Bidhuri, and his family were openly engaging in "hooliganism" without facing any consequences, while she was being targeted.

BJP’s Response

Countering her allegations, BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri stated that Atishi's reaction stemmed from her fear of defeat in the upcoming elections. "She is panicking and should not undermine the dignity of the constitutional post she holds," he remarked.

The matter continues to develop as investigations proceed.
