Delhi Police Boosts Emergency Preparedness with Shelter Plans and New Disaster Response Force

Delhi Police intensifies emergency preparedness; maps shelters, lists vulnerable residents.webp

Basements, Metro Stations Identified as Air Raid Shelters; Specialised Unit Formed for Disaster Response

New Delhi, May 10 — In response to rising tensions amid the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan, the Delhi Police has intensified emergency preparedness efforts, identifying safe shelters and launching a new disaster response unit to protect residents during crises better.

A senior police official confirmed that all district police units have been directed to earmark secure locations — including basements of residential and commercial buildings and metro stations — as emergency shelters in the event of air raids or missile strikes.

“We are taking proactive steps to ensure civilian safety. A special drive is underway to prepare lists of vulnerable residents, such as children and the elderly, to ensure swift evacuation and care during emergencies,” the official said.

Community Engagement and Safety Drills

To strengthen preparedness, Delhi Police is actively engaging civil defence volunteers, resident welfare associations (RWAs), and local beat constables. Their role is to raise awareness about safety protocols during aerial threats, including how to respond to sirens and seek cover in designated shelters.

“Quick, informed action saves lives. Public education is as important as response mechanisms,” another official emphasized.

District-level police chiefs (DCPs) have also been instructed to assess available infrastructure that can be converted into relief shelters and to work closely with the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and municipal agencies for resource mobilisation.

Launch of Delhi Police Disaster Response Force (DPDRF)

In a significant step towards enhanced crisis management, the Delhi Police has constituted a dedicated disaster response unit, the Delhi Police Disaster Response Force (DPDRF). This newly formed unit comprises approximately 270 trained personnel, including constables and sub-inspectors, undergoing a rigorous six-week training program at the Ghaziabad National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) facility.

“These officers are being trained to handle rescue operations in a wide range of scenarios such as fires, urban floods, building collapses, and even air raids,” a police source said. “They are also equipped to manage chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) emergencies.”

So far, around 150 personnel have completed the training, with the remaining expected to graduate by the end of May. The unit will be split into three companies, strategically stationed in South, East, and New Delhi to ensure rapid deployment during crises.

Public Advised to Stay Calm, Cooperate

Amid the current conflict scenario, authorities are urging residents to stay alert yet calm and strictly follow advisories issued by official sources. More awareness drives and safety drills are planned across the capital to ensure citizens are well-informed and prepared.

The comprehensive preparedness plan underscores Delhi Police’s commitment to public safety during heightened security threats, making the city more resilient to natural and man-made emergencies.
