New Delhi, Feb 26: In a major crackdown on cyber fraud, Delhi Police has arrested two individuals accused of duping people by falsely promising mobile tower installations on their properties in exchange for hefty registration fees. The arrested suspects, identified as Sarfaraz (36) and Munna Singh (37), allegedly ran fake websites and misleading online advertisements to trick victims into believing they were dealing with legitimate telecom companies.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Nidhin Valsan, the scam came to light after a Delhi resident from Pooth Khurd lodged a complaint. The victim had paid ₹1.85 lakh as a registration fee and other charges for the supposed tower installation, only to realize later that he had been scammed.

Modus Operandi

The fraudsters reportedly created deceptive websites resembling those of reputed telecom firms and used targeted online advertisements to attract victims. Once contacted, they convinced the property owners to pay registration fees, after which all communication was abruptly cut off.

Sarfaraz, a university graduate from Bihar, had previously worked as a freelance website developer before turning to cybercrime, while Munna Singh, a BCA graduate with prior experience in IT firms in Noida and Gurugram, handled the digital marketing aspect of the scam.

Investigation and Arrest

Police teams traced the accused through mobile numbers linked to fraudulent bank accounts and hosting details of their fake websites. Surveillance efforts led to Sarfaraz’s arrest on February 21 from Samalkha in Delhi, followed by the capture of Munna Singh from Mahavir Enclave.

During the operation, police recovered two mobile phones and four laptops, along with uncovering more than 50 fraudulent websites linked to the scam. Authorities are now working with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (i4C) to investigate potential nationwide connections.

Ongoing Investigation

The case underscores the growing menace of cyber fraud in India, with scammers leveraging digital platforms to defraud unsuspecting individuals. Police have urged citizens to remain cautious and verify sources before making any financial transactions related to telecom services.

Further investigation is underway to identify other accomplices and prevent similar scams in the future.
