
New Delhi, February 11 Police have registered a case of death due to negligence in connection with the death of a construction worker who fell into an open manhole in the city's Begumpur area a day ago, an official said on Wednesday.
A case has been registered under sections 285 (creating danger or obstruction in a public way or waterway) and 106 (causing death due to negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Begumpur Police Station, the official said.
On Tuesday, the lifeless body of 32-year-old Birju Kumar Rai was retrieved from an open manhole on vacant DDA land in Sector-32, Rohini.
The police were informed about the incident at 2:36 pm on the same day.
According to police, the caller, Amir Hussain, told them that Rai had been missing since Monday evening.
During the investigation, another construction worker, Budhan Das alias Suraj, 33, told police that he and Rai had consumed alcohol on Monday night and were returning to their slum around 7:30 pm when Rai lost his balance and fell into the open manhole.
The police said that Das did not inform anyone about the incident throughout the night and only alerted Hussain the next afternoon.
A team from the Begumpur Police Station, with the help of the fire brigade, retrieved the body from the manhole.
The police said that statements of witnesses are being recorded and CCTV footage is being examined as part of the investigation.
