New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI) – With just days to go before the crucial Delhi Assembly elections on February 5, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has called on the Election Commission (EC) to deploy special observers in his New Delhi constituency, citing alleged hooliganism by the BJP.
At a press conference on Sunday, Kejriwal accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating intimidation tactics against AAP workers and volunteers, claiming that "a storm of support" for his party has rattled the BJP.
BJP Fires Back: "Kejriwal Fears Defeat"
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly hit back, dismissing Kejriwal’s allegations as a sign of desperation. BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra countered that Kejriwal is facing imminent defeat and is resorting to abusive language against Amit Shah out of frustration."Kejriwal knows he is losing, and so is Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia. This has impacted his language and mental condition," Patra claimed, asserting that internal BJP surveys predict a "massive mandate" for the party in Delhi.
Kejriwal’s Complaint to Election Commission
In a formal complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Kejriwal detailed instances of attacks, threats, and intimidation allegedly orchestrated by BJP supporters against AAP workers. He further accused the Delhi Police of harassing AAP volunteers at the BJP’s behest."We fear our volunteers may be detained, threatened, or even assaulted on the eve of polling and election day, which could cripple our election operations," he stated in his letter.
Kejriwal urged the EC to:
✔ Deploy special election observers to monitor police activity in New Delhi constituency.
✔ Ensure AAP volunteers can work freely without intimidation.
✔ Take action against BJP workers and police officers allegedly involved in attacks.
Social Media Campaign Against BJP
To counter the alleged threats, Kejriwal announced the launch of a new social media campaign with the hashtag #AmitShahKiGoondagardi on X (formerly Twitter). He urged Delhiites to share their experiences of being attacked, threatened, or intimidated under BJP rule."The BJP has no vision for Delhi, no chief ministerial candidate, and no development agenda. All they have is hooliganism. They want to win through fear, not votes," Kejriwal charged, calling on residents to stand against "BJP's strong-arm tactics" and defend Delhi’s democratic integrity.
Election Showdown: AAP vs BJP vs Congress
The high-stakes Delhi Assembly elections will take place on February 5, with results to be declared on February 8. Kejriwal is locked in a triangular contest in New Delhi constituency against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit. While AAP is eyeing a third consecutive term, the BJP is aiming to break its 25-year losing streak in the national capital. With tensions running high, the final days of campaigning are expected to be intense and confrontational.
